Last May, I worked with the dedicated Alumni Association of the Mounds-Midway School of Nursing to mark the centennial of its founding with a fine history book and a wonderful celebration. The research and oral history interviews enriched my life as I had the opportunity to listen to the stories of dozens of remarkable women (and a few men!). I am now an honorary alumni of the Mounds-Midway School of Nursing. At the 2008 annual meeting, the board graciously awarded me this very special honor, recognizing the hard work that went into the history book. But please do not come to me for medical advice!
I look forward to the publication of three outstanding books in 2009 --- C. L. Webster's ground-breaking Entrepot: Government Imports into the Confederate States; James M. Schmidt and Guy R. Hasegawa, editors, Years of Change and Suffering: Modern Perspectives on Civil War Medicine; and Eric J. Wittenberg's much-anticipated memoir, Like a Meteor Blazing Brightly: The Short But Controversial Life of Colonel Ulric Dahlgren.
