Friendly Counsels for Freemen
The American Tract Society published this pamphlet for dsitribution among the freed slaves. Its author, Rev. Jared Bell Waterbury, D.D. (1799-1876), was born in New York City and converted at age 17 at the Rutgers Street Presbyterian Church. Waterbury graduated with high honors from Yale College in 1822, and entered Princeton Seminary the same year. In 1825 he was licensed to preach by the New York Presbytery. He was an agent for the American Bible Society, and was successful in advancing the cause of that organization by means of a tour of the southern States. Waterbury was pastor of several congregations in New York and New England during his long career, and during the Civil War was active in the Christian Commission.
