Northwestern Sanitary Fair
To the Friends of the Sanitary Commission In Minnesota.
The first of the series of Sanitary Fairs, which have been successful in providing resources for this great charity, were held in Chicago. It is now proposed to hold the last in that city, and as the people of the great Northwest inaugurated the system, to have them close it with one that shall, if possible, surpass all that have gone before.
While the war lasts, and while brave men suffer, we must not stay our hands in this good work. But it is confidently hoped that the pecuniary results of the approaching fair can be made sufficient to complete the work, and the cheering military prospects cause us to feel that this is, in all probability, the LAST CALL.
The brave men. who have represented Minnesota so nobly on the battle fields of the Union, have received many benefits from the Sanitary Commission. Directly or indirectly, thousands of them have felt the influence of its various departments of HOSPITAL INSPECTION, HOSPITAL DIRECTORY, BACK PAY, PENSION, PUBLICATION, and HOSPITAL SUPPLY. Many have been transported on its Hospital Cars and Steamboats, cared for by its nurses, or entertained at its Soldier's Homes. In view of these facts, we do but utter the sentiment of the loyal people of Minnesota, when we say that at the approaching Fair, Minnesota must not be behind the other Northwestern States. It is therefore proposed that we have in the Fair a
MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT.
1. As we are emphatically an agricultural state, our first dependence, if we achieve any success worthy of Minnesota, must be on the farmers. To this end we ask of every farmer in the State, One or more Bushels of Wheat. This will be carried by the transportation lines free of charge, and we trust, by this means, to represent appropriately the intelligence and liberality of our farming people. Contributions of butter, eggs, potatoes, and all other kinds of country produce are also solicited.
2. It is proposed to have in the Minnesota Department of the Fair, a Cabinet of Indian Curiosities for exhibition, It is well known that Eastern people, many thousands of whom will be present, feel a great admiration for the savages, whom we fail to appreciate, and for their benefit it is intended to have present, if possible, some living specimens of' "the poor Indian." We solicit contributions of Indian curiosities of every kind, such as birch canoes, medicine bags, snow shoes, tomahawks, and elk antlers, etc. These will not only afford an attractive exhibition, but, if donated to the department, will sell well. We have already some interesting contributions to this Cabinet, among which we may mention a pair of tame deers.
3. We solicit contributions from Ladies' Aid Societies Churches, Good Templar Lodges, Schools, etc., of Fancy Work and articles for sale of every description. Articles intended for immediate use in the hospitals, and all contributions of money, will be credited to the Minnesota Department of the Fair.
4. We trust that, especially in cities and villages, contributions of money will be solicited by means of Auxiliary Fairs, Festivals, and by personal canvass.
ORGANIZE. At every county seat and in every city and village let the ladies organize. Let them appoint committees in the rural towns to solicit wheat and other produce. This should be attended to promptly.
A committee of Minnesota Ladies will take charge of the department at Chicago.
Letters on business connected with the Fair, and remittances of money, should be addressed to the Rev. E. Eggleston, Special Agent N. W. San. Fair, Winona, Minn.
Articles intended for the Fair should be shipped either to D. W. Ingersoll, St. Paul, or to B. H. Langley & Co:, Winona, Minn., and marked "For Minn. Dept. San. Fair." Invoices should be placed on the inside of every box, and duplicate invoices sent to the Special Agent as above.
Wheat should be shipped directly to N. W. San. Com., Chicago, and bill of lading enclosed to Special Agent as above report will be published at the close of the Fair, giving credit to each county, city, village and town, and to each organization for its contributions.
We ask in conclusion, one last vigorous effort in behalf of this noble and patriotic work.
STEPHEN MILLER,
Pres't Minn. Branch San. Com.,
EDWD. EGGLESTON,
Special Agent N. W. San. Fair.
