"We didn't realize the extent of our history until you compiled the huge collection of audio-taped interviews, hundreds of documents, questionaires, and pictures. Through your insight, understanding, and especially your writing gift, you wrote a history that reflected our thoughts and our hopes as we studied to become nurses."

A True Nurse
Daniel J. Hoisington
The Swedish Hospital Alumnae Association published A True Nurse: The Story of the Swedish Hospital School of Nursing to honor its centennial.
More than three thousand women graduated from The Swedish Hospital School of Nursing between 1899 and 1973. They came as young women and left as skilled professional nurses. The book traces the three years of a student nurse, through stories about early days on the floors, capping ceremony, classes, clinical rotations, charge nights, rip day, and graduation. You'll learn about the years after graduation and the contributions of Swedish grads in hospitals and home, in the military and on the mission field.
The book is based on the stories of hundreds of graduates of the school, gathered through oral history interviews, questionnaires, and written reminiscences. It is illustrated with photographs from personal collections and the archives of the Historical Library of the Metropolitan Medical Center.
